Safety, Sovereignty,

and the Queer Digital Future

CHALLENGE

In India, Grindr operates in a high-stakes environment. The regulatory stance of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has shifted toward stringent compliance and rapid-response accountability.

Media coverage around Grindr is largely centred on criminal cases such as extortion, blackmail, fake profiles, assault and cybercrime, framing the app primarily through incidents of exploitation rather than community use or positive queer visibility.

STRATEGY

We designed the stakeholder analysis to guide Grindr’s strategic decision-making, product roadmap, risk management strategy and communication planning.

It identified and categorised stakeholders using the Power–Interest Grid, assessing them across two key parameters: power (the ability to influence or block decisions) and interest (the level of engagement or investment) in the platform’s operations and long-term growth in India.

OUTCOME

Our risk intelligence and stakeholder mapping proved critical when Grindr received a formal notice from MeitY following law-enforcement escalations—primarily in Tamil Nadu—linked to alleged narcotics misuse on the app.

The situation posed regulatory, reputational and operational risk.
Our groundwork enabled a swift, context-driven response across three layers:

Regulatory Positioning

We advised Grindr to adopt a more India-specific compliance lens in its communications. This included calibrating language to demonstrate alignment with Indian law enforcement processes and MeitY’s enforcement posture.

Legal Preparedness

Drawing on our understanding of intermediary obligations under the IT Act and DPDP framework, we helped outline procedural response pathways and connected the client with leading legal counsel equipped to handle platform liability and enforcement matters.

Institutional Interface

Leveraging our ecosystem mapping, we facilitated connections with key officials within MeitY to ensure clarity, transparency and responsiveness in engagement.

The result was a strategically grounded response at a moment of elevated scrutiny. The outcome is a forward-looking communications roadmap focused on safety messaging, regulatory transparency and institutional partnerships in alignment with India’s evolving digital accountability standards.
